Description

Methyl acetate (acetic acid methyl ester) is an organic substance in the class of esters that mixes well with organic solvent.

Applications

The main use of methyl acetate is a solvent of cellulose ethers, many synthetic resins, celluloid (mixed with other solvents), paints, resins, adhesives, polyester varnishes.

Methyl acetate is a component of many industrial solvents, compounds for removing old paint coatings.

Methyl acetate can also be used as an additive that increases the octane number of the fuel.

In accordance with TR 2435-063-00203766-2001 rev. No. 1,2 methyl acetate is a clear liquid without mechanical impurities (slightly yellow coloring is allowed), has the following characteristics:

Mass fraction of methyl acetate, %,

not less than 99.5

Mass fraction of methyl alcohol, %,

not more than 0.3

Mass fraction of acids in terms of acetic acid, %,

not more than 0.02

Mass fraction of water, %,

not more than 0.2

Mass fraction of other organic impurities, %,

not more than 0.05

Safety and regulation

Methyl acetate must be stored in an airtight container away from sources of ignition, heat, sparks, open flames and static electricity.

It is necessary to work with methyl acetate in rubber gloves and protective glasses with the use of explosion-proof equipment and lighting in a well-ventilated room. When working, avoid inhaling steam and aerosols; after work, wash hands thoroughly.
