Description

Orthoxylene (1,2-dimethylbenzene) is a compound of organic volatile liquids; one of the products resulting from the aromatization of petroleum fractions, intended for dissolving epoxy, acrylic and vinyl organic polymers, chlorinated rubber and nitrocellulose.

Applications

Orthoxylene is primarily intended for dissolving acrylic, vinyl, epoxy silicone polymers, nitorocellulose, chlorinated rubber.

Orthoxylene is also used to produce phthalic anhydride and phthalic acid, as a high-octane additive to motor fuels.

It is also important to use orthoxylol as a solvent for varnishes, paints, mastics, degreasing agents for all types of surfaces, in paintwork recipes.

Technical characteristics

Technical characteristics

Orthoxylene is a clear liquid that does not contain impurities and water and has a characteristic odor.

Orthoxylene oil, according to TU 38.101254-72 with amendment 1-9, has the following characteristics:

Density at 20 ° С, g/cm3

in the range of 0.878-0.880

Temperature limits of distillation from 5 to 95%, °С,

not more than 0.4

Crystallization temperature, °С

not lower than minus 25.5

Corresponds to the content of the main substance, mol. %,

not less than 9.2

Content of sulfurized substances, % of volume

not less -;

Bromine number, g of bromine per 100 ml of orthoxylene

not more than 0.18

Safety and regulation

Since orthoxylene is a highly flammable substance, it must be kept out of the reach of direct sunlight.

When working with orthoxylene, it is necessary to use personal protective equipment, the work should be carried out in a well-ventilated area.
