Description

Petroleum toluene (methylbenzene) is an organic compound that mixes well within unlimited limits with hydrocarbons, many alcohols and ethers, while mixing toluene with water is impossible.

Toluene dissolves polymers, for example, polystyrene at room temperature, polyethylene when heated.

Applications

Toluene mostly acts as a raw material in the production of benzene, benzoic acid, toluene diisocyanates, nitrotoluenes, benzyl chloride, additives to motor fuel and other organic substances.

Toluene is also widely used in the manufacture of paint and varnish products, in the manufacture and application of paints and varnishes, in the production of commercial solvents for paints and varnishes.

In addition, salts of benzoic acid, which is obtained by the oxidation of toluene, are applicable for canning in the food industry and as pharmaceuticals.

Technical characteristics

Toluene is a colorless mobile volatile liquid that does not contain impurities and water, with a strong odor.

Petroleum toluene, according to GOST 14710-78 rev. No. 1-6, has the following characteristics:

Density at 20 °С, g/cm3

0.865-0.867

Safety and regulation

Petroleum toluene should be stored in separate metal tanks, preventing precipitation and dust from entering them. The substance and its solutions can be stored in glass containers.

When working with toluene, it is necessary to use personal protective equipment, such as filtering mask, goggles, rubber gloves, protective clothing, protective ointments and pastes; work should be done in a well-ventilated area.
