Description

Propylene glycol (1,2-propandiol, 1,2-dioxypropane, mono-propylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, propane-1,2-diol) is a colorless viscous liquid, which has the property to absorb water vapor from the air. Propylene glycol has low volatility and toxicity, does not cause corrosion, is soluble in water, ethanol, diethyl alcohol, acetone and chloroform.

Applications

One of the main applications of propylene glycol is the production of non-freezing liquids and heat carriers. This product is also used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins and in the paint industry.

In the food industry, propylene glycol is widely used as a food additive E1520, for the production of pet food, in the manufacture of tobacco products, as well as lotions, shampoos, emulsions, creams, lipsticks, wet wipes.

Propylene glycol can also be used in the pharmaceutical industry as a hygroscopic substance and solvent in therapeutic fluids and ointments.

Safety and regulation

Propylene glycol should be stored in opaque aluminum tanks or in stainless steel or high density polyethylene containers with fire and explosion protection. Propylene glycol should be stored in covered, well-ventilated warehouses heated in winter. In this case, exposure to heat of the heating systems and direct sunlight should not be allowed. The recommended temperature for its storage is from 0 to 20 °C.

Work with propylene glycol should be carried out in special chemical-resistant gloves in a well-ventilated area.
